Start your Madeira experience by touching down at Cristiano Ronaldo Airport<\/strong>. Did you know that the soccer star was born on the island? If not, don\u2019t worry – you\u2019ll find many more clues about him being the pride of the Madeirans during your trip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially in Funchal, the vibrant capital bursting with colors, tropical flavors and the Portuguese charm. Spend your first day exploring the historic streets lined with colorful houses and blooming gardens. Don’t miss a visit to the iconic \u201cMercado dos Lavradores<\/strong>\u201d. At the Funchal farmers market, you can try all sorts of exotic fruits and local veggies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Early birds can witness the local fishermen sell their catch of the day at the fish market, right next to the fruit-, veggie and flower stalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

End the first day by strolling along the promenade and picking one of the many restaurants for dinner. Barreirinha Bar Cafe<\/strong> promises amazing ocean views and very reasonable prices. Rise early for an exhilarating day of adventure! Head to Pico do Arieiro<\/strong>, the third-highest peak on the island, for a once-in-a-lifetime sunrise and jaw-dropping panoramic views. The drive from Funchal might be steep and winding but it only takes about 40 minutes. Plus, you can park your car right next to a great viewing point. Being over the clouds, you can have stunning views of both sunrise and sunset, even if the weather is all cloudy in Funchal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After your visit to Pico do Arieiro, it\u2019s time to kick off your hiking adventures with an easy hike, namely Levada dos Balcoes<\/strong>. This levada is suitable for older kids too, as it has no inclines or steep sections. Just make sure to wear shoes suitable for rocky or muddy terrain but otherwise this is an easy, pretty flat walk through lush Madeiran forest that leads you towards – who could\u2019ve guessed it – a \u201cbalcony\u201d. Plan an hour to one and a half hours for this walk and prepare yourself for some amazing views at the balcony!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 3: Madeiras West – Fanal, Porto Moniz & Seixal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Today, it’s all about exploring a magical forest and the rugged beauty of Madeira’s northern coast. Your day starts strong with a visit to Fanal<\/strong>. Ancient laurel trees, rolling green hills and the occasional cow are some of the iconic features of this highland gem. However, keep in mind that the weather up here can change within minutes. Sunshine, rain storms, fog: Fanal has it all so dress accordingly.
Tip:<\/strong> Fanal is a photographer’s playground. From mystical fog that makes the trees look like living creatures to moss covered trunks and beautiful above-the-clouds sunrises. Pack your gear and fall in love with this ancient forest!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After your stop in Fanal, you\u2019re heading towards Porto Moniz<\/strong>, known for its natural volcanic pools<\/strong>. Take a refreshing dip and then journey towards Seixal. On the way there, stop at Miradouro Ilh\u00e9us da Ribeira da Janela<\/strong>, the iconic rock formation with a viewing platform that makes you feel like you entered Narnia.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drive to Parque Florestal das Queimadas<\/strong>, the starting point of Levada Caldeir\u00e3o Verde<\/strong>. Here you\u2019ll find a parking lot, toilets and a small cafe to prepare yourself for the hike. Be aware that this is a medium hike with around 17 km<\/strong>. Usually, it will take six to seven hours to complete. But everyone who braves this hike will be rewarded with not one but three waterfalls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might have seen them on the way to Queimadas, but after your straining hike it\u2019s time for a quick stop at the traditional thatched-roof houses known as “palheiros<\/strong>,” a true symbol of Madeiran heritage. While still in Santana, you might want to replenish some of the calories you burnt at Caldeir\u00e3o Verde:<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Tip:<\/strong> Cabo Aereo Cafe<\/strong> which is located just outside of Santana at a high cliff serves the freshest local cuisine (like espetadas) for a very fair price. Drive through this stunning waterfall and, if you dare, take a refreshing dip underneath it. Just keep in mind that this waterfall highly depends on recent rainfall.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Day 6: First Option – Monte Palace Tropical Garden & Toboggan Sledding<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you want to add another day in Funchal, this option might be for you. Take the cable car from Funchal up to Monte and experience one of the best views over the city and ocean. Monte Palace Tropical Garden<\/strong>, a botanical paradise, awaits at the end of the cable car ride. Because the botanical garden displays some rare flora from around the world and offers stunning views, this might be the perfect place for phytology friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Afterward, ascend the steps to the \u201cIgreja Nossa Senhora do Monte<\/strong>\u201d, a lovely church overlooking the city of Funchal. Then brace yourself for a ride aboard the iconic toboggan sleds<\/strong>. The sled takes you from Monte to Livramento. Plan at least two and a half hours for this 6 km (incl. return) <\/strong>medium hike. Afterwards, you\u2019ll find a small cafe and toilets. Those who don\u2019t want to brave the return hike, can book a boat tour to the mainland. Just be aware that the boat drop off is around 20 minutes walking distance from the parking lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
