Madeira in a Week: Your Perfect 7-Day First-Timer’s Itinerary

Europe, Madeira, 7 Day Itinerary

Your perfect 7-day Madeira Itinerary: Welcome to the jewel of the Atlantic, where rugged cliffs meet the pristine beauty of a subtropical island! Visiting Madeira means exploring lush flora, dramatic landscapes, and the vibrant Portuguese culture.

So buckle up as this itinerary will take you on a seven-day journey through the heart of this enchanting island.

Day 1: Welcome to Madeira – Arrival in Funchal

Start your Madeira experience by touching down at Cristiano Ronaldo Airport. Did you know that the soccer star was born on the island? If not, don’t worry – you’ll find many more clues about him being the pride of the Madeirans during your trip.

Especially in Funchal, the vibrant capital bursting with colors, tropical flavors and the Portuguese charm. Spend your first day exploring the historic streets lined with colorful houses and blooming gardens. Don’t miss a visit to the iconic “Mercado dos Lavradores”. At the Funchal farmers market, you can try all sorts of exotic fruits and local veggies.

Early birds can witness the local fishermen sell their catch of the day at the fish market, right next to the fruit-, veggie and flower stalls.

End the first day by strolling along the promenade and picking one of the many restaurants for dinner. Barreirinha Bar Cafe promises amazing ocean views and very reasonable prices. Otherwise, you’ll find many options in Rua da Carreira and the surrounding streets.

Day 2: Madeira Sunrises – Pico do Arieiro & Levada dos Balcoes

Rise early for an exhilarating day of adventure! Head to Pico do Arieiro, the third-highest peak on the island, for a once-in-a-lifetime sunrise and jaw-dropping panoramic views. The drive from Funchal might be steep and winding but it only takes about 40 minutes. Plus, you can park your car right next to a great viewing point. Being over the clouds, you can have stunning views of both sunrise and sunset, even if the weather is all cloudy in Funchal.

After your visit to Pico do Arieiro, it’s time to kick off your hiking adventures with an easy hike, namely Levada dos Balcoes. This levada is suitable for older kids too, as it has no inclines or steep sections. Just make sure to wear shoes suitable for rocky or muddy terrain but otherwise this is an easy, pretty flat walk through lush Madeiran forest that leads you towards – who could’ve guessed it – a “balcony”. Plan an hour to one and a half hours for this walk and prepare yourself for some amazing views at the balcony!

Day 3: Madeiras West – Fanal, Porto Moniz & Seixal

Today, it’s all about exploring a magical forest and the rugged beauty of Madeira’s northern coast. Your day starts strong with a visit to Fanal. Ancient laurel trees, rolling green hills and the occasional cow are some of the iconic features of this highland gem. However, keep in mind that the weather up here can change within minutes. Sunshine, rain storms, fog: Fanal has it all so dress accordingly.
Tip: Fanal is a photographer’s playground. From mystical fog that makes the trees look like living creatures to moss covered trunks and beautiful above-the-clouds sunrises. Pack your gear and fall in love with this ancient forest!

After your stop in Fanal, you’re heading towards Porto Moniz, known for its natural volcanic pools. Take a refreshing dip and then journey towards Seixal. On the way there, stop at Miradouro Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela, the iconic rock formation with a viewing platform that makes you feel like you entered Narnia.

Later, unwind in the charming village of Seixal, where black sand beaches and crystalline waters invite you to a relaxing afternoon at the beach.

Day 4: Hiking Madeira – Levada Caldeirão Verde & Santana

It’s halftime of your 7-day Madeira itinerary. Get ready to lace up your hiking boots as day 4 takes you to another breathtaking Levada. Drive to Parque Florestal das Queimadas, the starting point of Levada Caldeirão Verde. Here you’ll find a parking lot, toilets and a small cafe to prepare yourself for the hike. Be aware that this is a medium hike with around 17 km. Usually, it will take six to seven hours to complete. But everyone who braves this hike will be rewarded with not one but three waterfalls.

You might have seen them on the way to Queimadas, but after your straining hike it’s time for a quick stop at the traditional thatched-roof houses known as “palheiros,” a true symbol of Madeiran heritage. While still in Santana, you might want to replenish some of the calories you burnt at Caldeirão Verde:

Tip: Cabo Aereo Cafe which is located just outside of Santana at a high cliff serves the freshest local cuisine (like espetadas) for a very fair price. It’s one of the gold nuggets of this 7-day Madeira itinerary. 😉 And cat lovers might want to say hi to the furry locals hanging around the terrace.

Day 5: Whale Watching & Cabo Girao

Of course this 7-day Madeira itinerary includes some wildlife adventure, too. After a day of exhilarating hikes it is time to recharge with a day at sea. Embark on a whale watching excursion from Funchal’s harbor, where you might spot pilot whales, different dolphin species, sea turtles and flying fish. Expert guides will enrich your experience with insights into marine life. You can book your catamaran cruise here.

Later, head to Cabo Girão, Europe’s highest cape. Admire the views from the 580 meter high glass-bottomed skywalk and enjoy the stunning coastline.

For dinner, unwind in one of the coastal towns like Calheta or Camara de Lobos. Indulge in fresh seafood or a meat skewer, aka “espetada”, paired with local ingredients and Madeira wine.

Tip: While on the way from Calheta back to Funchal, plan a stop at Cascata dos Anjos. It’s a – more or less – hidden waterfall that falls directly onto the narrow road. Drive through this stunning waterfall and, if you dare, take a refreshing dip underneath it. Just keep in mind that this waterfall highly depends on recent rainfall.

Day 6: First Option – Monte Palace Tropical Garden & Toboggan Sledding

If you want to add another day in Funchal, this option might be for you. Take the cable car from Funchal up to Monte and experience one of the best views over the city and ocean. Monte Palace Tropical Garden, a botanical paradise, awaits at the end of the cable car ride. Because the botanical garden displays some rare flora from around the world and offers stunning views, this might be the perfect place for phytology friends.

Afterward, ascend the steps to the “Igreja Nossa Senhora do Monte”, a lovely church overlooking the city of Funchal. Then brace yourself for a ride aboard the iconic toboggan sleds. The sled takes you from Monte to Livramento. From there it’s a 30 minute walk back to Funchal Old Town or a few minute drive with a taxi or Bolt.

Second Option –  Ponta de São Lourenço

For those craving one final adventure, Ponta de São Lourenço awaits with it’s rugged beauty and dramatic coastal vistas. Start your day early, as you will visit the easternmost point of the island, which surely calls for a sunrise hike, no?

Plan at least two and a half hours for this 6 km (incl. return) medium hike. Afterwards, you’ll find a small cafe and toilets. Those who don’t want to brave the return hike, can book a boat tour to the mainland. Just be aware that the boat drop off is around 20 minutes walking distance from the parking lot.

Day 7: Goodbye Madeira

As your unforgettable week in Madeira comes to a close, take one last stroll along the picturesque streets of Funchal. Savor the sights, sounds, and flavors of this captivating island. If you have the time, visit the Parque Santa Catarina for a last view over the city.

With its diverse landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality, Madeira is a destination that promises to enchant at every turn. So pack your bags and let the Hawaii of Europe (with the help work its magic on you!
